Common warning signs that you have a slab leak

Slab leaks can appear at any time. An unexplained increase in your water bill is the most common indicator, but you may also hear water running while all fixtures are shut off, fluctuations in your water pressure and temperature, or wet patches on your floor. Some slab leaks will be very obvious due to water pooling, while others may not be discovered for some time.

Simple test to determine if you have a slab leak

The easiest way to confirm a leaking pipe under your foundation is to shut off all water flow in your home.

  1. Close all faucets and ensure no appliances that use water are left on.
  2. Record your usage at your water meter.
  3. Wait 1-8 hours.
  4. Record your usage again at the water meter, and compare to earlier recording.

What are common causes of slab leaks?

Corrosion of your pipes is the most common cause - either from constant contact with other metals in your soil or due to water chemistry. Using some commercial cleaners will speed up the corrosion of copper pipes.

Shifting foundations can also cause pipes to burst, if your foundation is off or has been repaired recently you should monitor your water bill to ensure you do not have any leaks.

Less common causes are poor craftsmanship when the pipes were originally installed, or from high water pressure.
